Léiffrawëschdag

Saturday From 00:00 to 00:00

Traditional mosel event

This event brings many visitors to Greiweldengen every year. In 2009 we celebrated the 25th “Léiffrawëschdag”.

All of the village associations and inhabitants work together to ensure the numerous guests have an enjoyable experience.

In the late morning the festival starts with a church service, during which the “Wësch“ is blessed. At noon typical Luxembourgish dishes such as “warm ham, broad beans and potatoes with bacon” or a “vintner’s plate” are served. Art and craft stalls are spread throughout the village centre and entice the visitors.

Furthermore one can also taste the local products of our wine-growers and distillers. A multi-faceted musical agenda guarantees the guests’ entertainment far into the night.

The tradition

According to ancient tradition the herbal bouquet is blessed on the day of the Assumption of Mary (August 15).

The bouquet of herbs includes wild herbs and garden herbs and various grain. A carrot and an onion complete the package.

In the past, the children received the carrot after the blessing and the bouquet was hung in the barn to the cattle to protect them from diseases. The grain were mixed with the seed. The herbs were used as tea and the onion went into the soup.

In former times, when someone died, the consecrated bouquet was even laid in the coffin as a pillow.
